What Is the Lagna?
The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the precise moment of your birth. Unlike the Sun sign — which changes once every thirty days — the Lagna changes approximately every two hours. This is why an accurate birth time is so important in Vedic Astrology.
Why Is the Lagna So Important?
The Lagna sets the entire framework of the Janam Kundli. Each of the twelve houses in the chart is counted from the Lagna. The first house is the Lagna, and it represents:
- Your physical body and general health
- Your outward personality and first impression
- Your overall vitality and life force (Prana)
- The direction of your life's expression
The Lagna Lord
Every Lagna sign has a ruling planet — the Lagna Lord. The strength, placement, and condition of the Lagna Lord in your chart significantly colour your life experience and opportunities. A strong Lagna Lord in a favourable house generally indicates resilience and forward momentum.
Lagna vs. Sun Sign
Your Sun sign tells you about your core identity and ego. Your Lagna tells you how that identity expresses itself in the world. Many people find the Lagna description far more accurate to their lived experience than their Sun sign alone.
A Note on Accuracy
Because the Lagna changes every two hours, even a 30-minute error in your recorded birth time can place the Lagna in a different sign entirely — and shift every house cusp in your chart.
